Tim Hulse

Ryan Fox

With a combined experience of over 60 years in the fire service, including significant leadership roles from lieutenant upwards, we have dedicated a significant portion of our careers to the advancement and safety of fire service professionals in this region.

Our journey, training and teaching across various departments and multiple states has revealed a critical gap: while firefighting training is robust, there is a noticeable deficiency in the professional development of current and future fire service leaders. We give firefighters tools to accomplish the tasks but fail to give fire officers appropriate tools to accomplish the tasks of managing, leading and supervising a team. Recognizinig this need, we founded North West Officer Development to address and ultimately bridge this gap.

We offer a dynamic training workshop designed to challenge and engage participants while ensuring that the members of your team are on the “same page” tactically and administratively. BC Hulse narrows in and drills down on essential leadership skills such as management, supervision, strategic planning and effective documentation practices. We delve into nuanced aspects of coaching, mentoring and the appropriate application of commendations as well as correction and disciplinary actions using tools that have been specifically developed to achieve these tasks. Chief Fox presents a fundamental approach to strategy and tactics tailored to today’s fire service realities. This section emphasises the critical tools and triggers needed for managing high-stakes incidents, enhancing strategic and tactical decision-making through a review of “details of immediate practical importance”.

Our training is highly customized to reflect and resonate with the unique culture and specific challenges of your organization. This isn’t a canned lecture; we adapt our content to address any identified gaps, ensuring that the training is as relevant and impactful as possible. We believe “if you’re not learning, you’re losing”, and this training is exactly what today’s leaders want and need.

We are eager to discuss how NWOD can specifically support your team and would appreciate the opportunity to outline our training modules while gaining a deeper understanding of your specific needs and expectations. Thank you for considering this opportunity to elevate the capabilities of your leadership team. We look forward to the possibility of collaborating with you and your training team to develop your leaders and enhance your department’s operational readiness.

Respectfully,

Tim Hulse and Ryan Fox

"I want to make sure people know the value we experienced and that we highly recommend this to anyone trying to figure out the leadership/discipline dynamic that is vital to the succession program of any/all organizations!

The NWOD class was full of valuable content that not only provided immediate direction for our company officers, acting company officers and battalion chiefs but also established a solid foundation for the future in how we expect our leaders to guide their subordinates going forward.

This course has given more direction in the way of coaching/counselling/discipline than any method we have used over the last decade, and it has already shown its roots in multiple evaluations from our company officers."

"North West Officer Development and more specifically the instructors, Chief Fox and Chief Hulse, delivered on their promise! Like many organizations, we have a young officer group that were seeking training opportunities to further develop and enhance their leadership skills in an effort to feel comfortable and confident when having difficult conversations and holding each other accountable. Both Chief Fox and Chief Hulse were able to provide meaningful context that brought to the forefront tools and tips that would help our group feel confident in their ability to coach, mentor and provide the necessary correction if warranted. Chief Fox and Chief Hulse were well prepared, professional, and down to earth which provided a great learning experience for our department. I would highly recommend North West Officer Development training for those seeking to enhance their leadership skills."
